Sea Level Rise: more than one global number
11:00 - 12:30 CEST
Sea level rise is governed by many processes, that vary strongly between regions, and show fluctuations at multiple time scales. Uncertainties are considerable, and changes in the past will not be the same as what we can expect in the future. This session will address sea level changes across spatial and temporal scales, from the global mean to regional and coastal scales, and from long-term sea level rise and its uncertainties to projected extreme sea levels at the coast. A panel discussion will bridge the sea level science to stakeholders, addressing questions such what is needed for climate services, how to interpret sea level changes data and visualize them.
Moderator: Matthew Simpson, Norwegian Mapping Authority
Presentations:
1. What is a reasonable high-end estimate and how to get there?
- Roderik van de Wal, Utrecht University, and Co-leader of Task Group: Physical Science, Knowledge Hub on Sea Level Rise
2. How to get from global to local projections of sea level changes?
- Angélique Melet, Mercator Ocean, and Co-leader of Task Group: Physical Science, Knowledge Hub on Sea Level Rise
3. What extremes to expect?
- Michalis Vousdoukas, European Joint Research Centre, European Commission
Panel discussion:
- Jason Lowe, Met Office of the United Kingdom
- Marta Marcos, Sea Level and Climate Team, University of the Balearic Islands
- Matthew Palmer, Met Office of the United Kingdom and Associate Professor, University of Bristol
- Florence Colleoni, National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, Italy
Lunch break
Sea Level Rise: more than rising water
13:45 - 15:15 CEST
With transgressing seas, coastal erosion is a prominent impact of sea level extremes in some regions, while other areas are exposed to flood risk, salt water intrusion or major changes in the dynamics of estuaries or river deltas. We will review major impacts of sea level rise and its variability across locations and time windows.
Moderator: Déborah Idier, French Geological Survey
Presentations:
1. Multi-impacts in Venice: a case study
- Piero Lionello, Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change
2. Coastal erosion
- Arjen Luijendijk, Deltares NL
3. Projections
- Alexandra Toimil, University of Cantabria
4. Coastal flooding and compound events
- Paula Camus, University of Cantabria
Panel discussion:
- Helena Björn, LIFE CoastAdapt project, Sweden
- Robert Nicholls, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of East Anglia
- Luisa Perini, Regione Emilia Romagna
