Save the date: Webinars on new Footprint data and city Footprinting

We're proud to announce the launch of the National Footprint Accounts 2018 Edition on our Footprint Explorer open data platform on Wednesday, March 28! We would like to invite you to two webinars to learn about our latest Footprint data and new features on the Footprint Explorer.

What are the National Footprint Accounts?

Global Footprint Network is addressing the biggest challenges of the 21st century: climate change and natural resource constraints. Our Ecological Footprint is the only sustainability tool that addresses these interrelated challenges in a single, scalable metric. The foundation of our work is the National Footprint Accounts, which we update every year based on the latest available data. The Footprint Accounts measure the ecological resource use and resource capacity of more than 200 countries from 1961 to the present. More than a dozen countries and countless government leaders and environmental organizations around the world have used this data to influence and develop sustainability policy.

As part of the 2018 Edition launch, Global Footprint Network is adding interactive maps to the Footprint Explorer. We are also adding dozens of new ways to sort data in our downloadable Public Data Package Excel file.

Q&A with Xavier Houot: Schneider Electric’s business model aims to #movethedate

Schneider Electric initiated a broad partnership with Global Footprint Network on metrics, innovation and stakeholder engagement. It also includes sponsoring the new Footprint Calculator. We partnered because Schneider Electric’s business model is closely aligned with getting humanity out of ecological overshoot. We recently talked with Xavier Houot, Senior Vice President Safety, Environment, and Real Estate, at Schneider’s offices in Paris about the company's strategic outlook. READ MORE

Making the Sustainable Development Goals consistent with sustainability

The Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN (SDGs) are game changers. Both were launched in 2015. We want them both to succeed.

Paris has a clear goal, but struggles with implementation. The SDGs are more complex. Therefore, we analyzed them and realized that they need to be stronger to live up to their name since the current SDGs are still negatively correlated with sustainability. This tragic finding is documented in our paper "Making the Sustainable Development Goals Consistent with Sustainability." The paper concludes that development needs to embrace resource security in order to deliver lasting results. READ MORE

Can you guess this country?

March marks this country’s Overshoot Day—the date on which Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like the people in this country. To get this value, we compare the country’s Ecological Footprint to global biocapacity. See our Country Overshoot Days page for more details!

This country is rich with natural resources and is home to only one-half of one percent of the world's population. Cities in this country have been at the forefront of using local Footprinting to inform sustainability policy.

Now can you guess this country?
