Mind Matters – Raising the bar on mental health
Presented by Boehringer Ingelheim

Rewatch here
Mental health is on the rise. People around the world are grappling with the soaring cost of living, war in Ukraine and the pandemic in recent memory. To destigmatize mental health problems and ensure universal access to care and treatment for citizens, the European Commission and the US government have respectively put forward a strategy on mental health this year. The World Health Organization has also called for concrete actions. However, more needs to be done as well as a coordinated approach at global level.
Questions to be addressed include:
- To what extent are the global mental health initiatives going to have an impact on the growing mental health crisis?
- What are the most promising measures at global level, and can they be achieved? And where does the EU and U.S. initiatives fall short?
- How can public authorities help break silos in mental health care and encourage best practice across all sectors and policies? And how can they encourage the adoption of best practice models?
- Is the approach holistic enough to tackle the whole spectrum of mental health disorders, including the most complex ones? Is the balance between prevention and treatment measures the right one?
- What would be the economic cost of continued inaction – or limited action – in tackling mental health on individuals, health care systems, and the broader economy?
POLITICO convenes EU policymakers, patients and global experts for a frank discussion on mental health and the actions needed to tackle worsening both at EU and global level.
